General Labourer (Landscaping) - Job Description

Reports To
Supervisor, Management

Summary
The General Labourer is responsible for the maintenance and development of William A. Gerhardt Property Improvement and clients' grounds under a supervisor's direction. The General Labourer shall be responsible to operate and maintain equipment and tools according to the manufacturer's specifications. All tasks to be performed abiding by the Nova Scotia Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. He/she plants, cultivates flowers, shrubs, trees, and all related duties, will uphold grass areas to established standards, will assist in all areas of landscape construction [including but not limited to] lawn installation, retaining walls, septic installation, ditching and general property cleanup. The general labourer shall also assist in snow removal operations during the winter months.

Job Description - General Mechanic

Reports To: Shop Supervisor

Summary

The General Mechanic is required to perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of vehicles and also equipment such as mowing tractors, loaders, snow removal equipment, salt spreaders, etc. The candidate must be able to analyze, troubleshoot, dismantle, align, assemble and adjust mechanical equipment and machinery to maintain it in efficient operating condition. Work assignments will be received in the form of oral or written work orders, but the employee is expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs.

Job Duties

- Provide vehicle troubleshooting and diagnostic repairs
- Experience working with commercial equipment, machinery and vehicles
- Installation of new and added-on equipment
- Conduct first, second and third line repairs, modifications on vehicles
- Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs to municipal equipment in order to ensure that the equipment is available, reliable and safe to operate

Heavy Equipment Operator

Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors and other pieces of equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by legislation, policies and procedures.

The Heavy Equipment Operator must deal with residents and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of service. The Heavy Equipment Operator must make note of and report on any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner.

Job Duties

- Operate hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and any other necessary mechanical components
- Operate gasoline and diesel powered units

Truck Driver Local & Long Haul

Reports To: Dispatcher / Freight Coordinator

Summary

Truck Drivers will operate a tractor-trailer combination or a truck with a capacity of at least 26,000 GVW, to transport and deliver goods, livestock, or materials in liquid, loose, or packaged form. May be required to load and unload truck. Drivers may be required to use automated routing equipment. Truck Drivers require commercial drivers' license.

Truck drivers work in the cab of the truck while driving, and outside when needed to load or unload. They can encounter all kinds of road, weather and traffic conditions. Truck drivers generally work without direct supervision, and may be paid on a per mile/kilometer basis, hourly or a combination of both. The number of hours a driver may drive in a given period is subject to regulation. Overtime and weekend work is common.
